Benched late in losing effort
Hurts completed just seven of his 20 passing attempts for 72 yards, no touchdowns and an interception while adding 34 yards and two rushing touchdowns on eight carries before being benched in favor of Nate Sudfeld in the second half of Sunday's loss to the Washington Football Team.
Analysis: Hurts will finish his abbreviated time as a rookie starter with a 52 percent completion rate, 1,061 passing yards, six touchdowns and five interceptions to go along with 354 rushing yards and three more scores on 63 carries over 15 games (three starts). Controversy has swirled around the 2020 second-round pick from the time he replaced Carson Wentz to his benching Sunday in a game that enabled Washington to clinch the NFC East division with a 7-9 record. Set to start season finale
Coach Doug Pederson said Monday that Hurts will start in the Week 17 game against Washington, Daniel Gallen of The Harrisburg Patriot-News reports.
Analysis: The Eagles were eliminated from playoff contention with Sunday's 37-17 loss to the Cowboys. Hurts will close out the season under center for the Eagles, aiming to play spoiler for Washington. Through three games as a starter, Hurts has completed 62 of 113 passes (54.9 percent) for 847 yards, five touchdowns and two interceptions, and he's added 238 yards and a score on the ground. His accuracy could improve, but Hurts has still recorded a respectable 7.7 yards per attempt this season, on par…read more

Tops 400 total yards in loss
Hurts completed 21 of 39 passes for 342 yards and a touchdown with two interceptions and added 69 rushing yards on nine carries in Sunday's 37-17 loss to the Cowboys.
Analysis: The rookie set a new career high in passing yards in his third NFL start, topping last week's 338 while once again posting strong numbers on the ground. However, he also committed multiple turnovers for the first time as the Eagles were eliminated from playoff contention. Hurts will at least get a chance to play spoiler in Week 17 as Philadelphia hosts a Washington club that needs to win to lock up an NFC East title.

Officially named starter again
Coach Doug Pederson said Monday that Hurts will start at Dallas in Week 16, Dave Zangaro of NBC Sports Philadelphia reports.
Analysis: The announcement doesn't come as any sort of surprise, given how spectacularly the rookie signal-caller has resurrected Philadelphia's offense in back-to-back starts. Hurts is coming fresh off a close loss to the Cardinals in which he went toe to toe with Kyler Murray, accounting for four total TDs while passing for 338 yards and rushing for another 63 yards. Given the playmaking abilities Hurts has displayed, both through the air and on the ground, he projects as a high-end fantasy option…read more

Accounts for four TDs in defeat
Hurts completed 24 of 44 pass attempts for 338 yards and three touchdowns Sunday against the Cardinals. He also carried 11 times for 63 yards and a touchdown in the 33-26 loss.
Analysis: Hurts completed just 55 percent of his passes, but seven passes of more than 20 yards helped him pile up an impressive yardage total. He connected with Quez Watkins and Greg Ward (twice) for touchdowns in a big second quarter and later scored his first career rushing touchdown. On that note, Hurts made several plays with his legs and has now generated 169 rushing yards on 29 attempts over his first two starts. Despite his inaccuracy and three fumbles (none lost) on the day, Hurts enjoyed an…read more

Drawing another start
Coach Doug Pederson confirmed Monday that Hurts will start Sunday's game against the Cardinals, Tim McManus of ESPN.com reports.
Analysis: Hurts was dynamic in Sunday's 24-21 upset win over the Saints, running for 106 yards while also avoiding mistakes through the air, with 167 passing yards and a touchdown. Considering the struggles Philadelphia's offense has endured with Carson Wentz under center this season, and how effective Hurts' skill set looked in his first NFL start, it doesn't come as a surprise to see Pederson commit to the rookie for at least another week. As he's already showcased, Hurts' elite rushing ability make…read more

Runs wild in win over Saints
Hurts completed 17 of 30 passes for 167 yards and a touchdown and carried the ball 18 times for 106 yards in Sunday's 24-21 win over the Saints.
Analysis: The New Orleans defense hadn't allowed a 100-yard rusher in 55 straight games, but both Hurts and Miles Sanders (115 yards and two TDs on 14 carries) reached that mark in the upset win. Hurts didn't exactly dazzle as a passer, but considering the quality of the opposition and the final result, it was a very successful first NFL start for the rookie. Eagles coach Doug Pederson hasn't yet committed to Hurts as his starter beyond this game, but it would be a shock if he weren't under center in a…read more

Taking over as starter
Head coach Doug Pederson plans to name Hurts the Eagles' new starting quarterback ahead of Sunday's game against the Saints, Adam Schefter of ESPN reports.
Analysis: Philadelphia will pull the plug on incumbent Carson Wentz after he again presided over an unproductive offense in last week's 30-16 loss to Green Bay, which dropped the Eagles to 3-8-1 on the season. After Wentz was removed in the second half, Hurts at least provided some semblance of a spark, completing five of 12 attempts for 109 yards, a touchdown and an interception to go with 29 yards on five carries. While questions about Hurts' accuracy and arm strength remain, the elite rushing ability…read more

Starter for Week 14 undetermined
Coach Doug Pederson said Monday that he hasn't yet decided whether Hurts or Carson Wentz will start Sunday's upcoming game against the Saints, Les Bowen of the Philadelphia Daily News reports.
Analysis: Hurts replaced Wentz in the third quarter of Sunday's 30-16 loss to Green Bay, and he managed the first passing TD of his young career while commanding the Eagles' final four drives. Pederson said Hurts provided "the spark that got us back in the football game," per Kristen Rodgers of FOX 29 Philadelphia, a likely allusion to the fact that he accounted for the Eagles' only offensive score of the day. Peterson said he'd make a decision at quarterback Wednesday, per Bowen, though it also could…read more

Throws first career TD in loss
Hurts replaced Carson Wentz at quarterback early in the third quarter of Sunday's 30-16 loss to the Packers, completing five of 12 passes for 109 yards and a touchdown with one interception. He also gained 29 rushing yards on five carries.
Analysis: The Eagles produced only a field goal in the first two quarters, and after Wentz led them to another three-and-out to begin the second half, Hurts got the call. While he wasn't particularly efficient in the first extended action of his NFL career, he did toss a 32-yard TD to Greg Ward midway through the fourth quarter for Philly's only offensive touchdown of the day. It's not clear yet who Doug Pederson will name as his starting QB for Week 14, but whoever is under center will face a very tough…read more

Likely to see added snaps Monday
Hurts is expected to see increased playing time at quarterback behind starter Carson Wentz in Monday's game against the Seahawks, Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reports.
Analysis: The Eagles have mostly deployed Hurts as a gadget player through their first 10 games, but this week, Rapoport notes that "unlike previous snaps, Wentz won't be on the field" when Hurts is out there. In preparation for Hurts taking on an expanded role, the Eagles have handed the rookie second-round pick increased reps with the first-team offense during recent practices, per Tim McManus of ESPN.com. According to Rapoport, the added usage with the first team is expected to result in Hurts seeing…read more

Will keep seeing designed plays
Coach Doug Pederson said Monday that getting Hurts involved on designed plays is "something we'll continue to explore" each week, Martin Frank of The Delaware News Journal reports.
Analysis: Pederson also suggested that Hurts could handle packages out of the backfield if Miles Sanders (knee) is forced to miss any time. The rookie signal-caller provided Philadelphia's offense with a few much-needed sparks during Sunday's 30-28 loss to the Ravens, though his insertion into the lineup was only occasional. On three touches Sunday (two carries, one reception), Hurts totaled 26 yards, and he also served as an effective decoy during a 74-yard run by Sanders which, after a fumble, resulted…read more

Deemed active Week 2
Hurts is listed as active Sunday against the Rams.
Analysis: Just one game removed from opening his pro career as a healthy scratch, Hurts will serve as the No. 2 quarterback to Carson Wentz, Chris McPherson of the Eagles' official site reports. The 2020 second-round pick will swap in for Nate Sudfeld, but it remains to be seen if Hurts will make any sort of impact or merely has surpassed Sudfeld for the backup gig.

Healthy scratch Sunday
Hurts (coach's decision) is listed as inactive Sunday at Washington.
Analysis: A healthy scratch to begin his NFL career, the 2020 second-round pick will don street clothes while Nate Sudfeld serves as Carson Wentz's backup. Without an injury to the two quarterbacks in front of him, Hurts may be a regular inactive for the Eagles for the foreseeable future.

Starts off as No. 3 QB
Coach Doug Pederson said Carson Wentz and Nate Sudfeld -- rather than Hurts -- will get most of the QB reps during training camp, Daniel Gallen of The Harrisburg Patriot-News reports.
Analysis: It isn't the first time Pederson has hinted at Hurts beginning his career as the No. 3 quarterback in Philadelphia. That said, the rookie took 16 snaps in a sharp performance at Monday's practice, while Sudfeld got 17 snaps and didn't play nearly as well, according to Eliot Shorr-Parks of 94 WIP. Even if Sudfeld enters Week 1 in the backup job, Hurts could oust him before the end of the season.

Likely to open career as No. 3 QB
Eagles coach Doug Pederson said Tuesday that while Hurts will have the opportunity to compete for the No. 2 quarterback job, the rookie is likely to begin the season behind both Carson Wentz and Nate Sudfeld on the depth chart, Matt Mullin of PhillyVoice.com reports. "Football teams are going to have to rely on their veteran players, and Nate is one of those guys for us. I have a ton of confidence in Nate to become the backup quarterback," Pederson said. "Nothing is ever handed to anybody, and we always try to create competition at every position, and quarterback is not exempt from that. But I fully expect Nate to come in and be aggressive and do the things that he's capable of doing and become the backup to Carson."
Analysis: Though the Eagles used the 53rd overall pick in April's draft on Hurts, that investment alone won't give the rookie the leg up in the job battle with Sudfeld, who is entering his fourth year in the Eagles' system. The shortened offseason in light of the coronavirus pandemic will only make it more difficult for Hurts to gain familiarity with Pederson's offensive scheme, so his first year in the NFL could be more of a developmental one, at least from the perspective of a traditional quarterback.…read more
