Production declines with Panthers
Whitehead finished the 2020 season with 51 tackles (27 solo), one interception and one fumble recovery in 14 games played.
Analysis: Whitehead signed a one-year deal with the Panthers as they sought to replace All-Pro linebacker Luke Kuechly following his retirement last offseason. Although the 30-year-old went on to start nine games, Whitehead played under 40 percent of Carolina's defensive plays overall, snapping his four-season streak of having 100-plus tackles. As he aims to rehab his value in 2021, it wouldn't be surprising to see Whitehead sign elsewhere in free agency.

Cleared for Sunday's game
Whitehead (ribs) is active for Sunday's game against the Vikings, David Newton of ESPN.com reports.
Analysis: Whitehead was active last week, but it appeared only to be in case of emergency, as he didn't log a snap on defense or special teams. Jermaine Carter has apparently usurped him as the starting middle linebacker anyway, and there's no indication that will change Sunday.

Good to go Sunday
Whitehead (ribs) is active for Sunday's game versus the Lions, Bill Voth of the Panthers' official site reports.
Analysis: Whitehead has started nine games at middle linebacker this season, but he hasn't logged more than 60 percent of the defensive snaps in a game since Week 2. As a result, he may fall short of 100 tackles for the first time since the 2015 season, as he's averaging 4.9 stops per game.

Draws questionable tag
Whitehead (ribs) is officially listed as questionable for Sunday's game against the Lions.
Analysis: Whitehead has put together back-to-back limited practices, and it looks as though a final decision on his availability could come down to a game-time decision. He's dipped below 50 percent of defensive snaps over the last two weeks, though, making him only a fringe fantasy option in IDP formats.

Limited Thursday
Whitehead (ribs) was a limited participant in Thursday's practice.
Analysis: Whitehead's rib injury kept him from practicing Wednesday, so it's encouraging to see him participating in at least limited fashion Thursday. However, the veteran linebacker has now been held below 50 percent of defensive snaps in back-to-back games, so he'll be difficult to trust for fantasy purposes even if he does suit up against the Lions on Sunday.

Doesn't practice Wednesday
Whitehead (ribs) didn't practice Wednesday, Bill Voth of the Panthers' official site reports.
Analysis: This is a new injury for Whitehead, who hasn't been on the injury report since dealing with a thigh injury in early October. It's possible this was more of a maintenance day for the 30-year-old linebacker, but Whitehead's participation level in practice over the rest of the week should dictate his status for Sunday's clash with the Lions.

To play Week 4 against Cardinals
Whitehead (thigh) is active for Sunday's matchup against Arizona.
Analysis: The newly acquired Whitehead collected six or more tackles in each of his first three games as a Panther, and he was not designated with an injury immediately following the team's Week 3 win over the Chargers. Whitehead popped up on the injury report Saturday, though the severity of the issue does not seem especially prohibitive given that he will not miss any game time. The 30-year-old will be tasked with helping the Panthers contain Arizona's seventh-ranked rushing attack (149.7 yards per…read more

Lands on injury report
Whitehead (thigh) is listed as questionable for Sunday's game versus the Cardinals, Myles Simmons of the Panthers' official site reports.
Analysis: Whitehead wasn't listed on the injury report all week, but he popped up Saturday with a thigh injury. The severity is unknown, so he should be considered a true game-time decision at this time. Adarius Taylor is slated to start at middle linebacker if Whitehead misses time.

Recovers fumble in win
Whitehead made seven tackles (two solo) and recovered a fumble in Sunday's 21-16 win over the Chargers.
Analysis: Whitehead scooped up a Brian Burns-forced fumble and ran 20 yards into Chargers territory to ultimately set up a field goal during the first quarter. The veteran also pitched in with regular tackling involvement over the course of Sunday's game, bringing his tally to 19 stops thus far. That mark trails only Jeremy Chinn and Shaq Thompson for Carolina's team lead through three weeks.

Signing with Panthers
Whitehead is signing a one-year contract with the Panthers, Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reports.
Analysis: Released by Oakland a couple weeks ago, Whitehead seems to have found the best possible scenario in terms of earning snaps. With Luke Kuechy retiring this offseason and the Panthers in the midst of a rebuild, the depth chart looks weak at a number of positions, including inside linebacker. Shaq Thompson has one starting job locked down, but Whitehead can compete with Jermaine Carter and/or Andre Smith for the other.

Cut loose by Raiders
Whitehead was released by the Raiders on Monday, Field Yates of ESPN reports.
Analysis: Per Yates, this move clears up nearly $6 million dollars in cap space for the Raiders. A productive veteran, Whitehead figures to have a market in free agency after recording over 100 tackles for the fourth straight year in 2019.

Surpasses 100 tackles again in 2019
Whitehead notched five tackles (all solo) in the Raiders' season-ending loss to the Broncos. He finishes the 2019 season with a team-high 108 tackles (79 solo) and one pass defensed.
Analysis: Whitehead racked up more than 100 tackles for a fourth straight year, handily securing the Raiders' team lead in tackles over safety Erik Harris (74 tackles). Whitehead did not create any turnovers nor sack an opposing quarterback in 16 games, however. Whitehead, who will turn 30 in April, is due to make a base salary of $5.95 million in the final year of his current contract with the Raiders in 2020.

Racks up 11 tackles in loss
Whitehead tallied 11 tackles (six solo) in Sunday's 42-21 loss to the Titans.
Analysis: Whitehead had logged only 10 total tackles throughout the Raiders' three previous games combined, so Sunday's 11-tackle performance was a solid bounce-back effort. Expect Whitehead back on the field for close to 100 percent of the Raiders' defensive snaps again in Week 15.

Stacks up 14 stops
Whitehead tallied 14 tackles (eight solo) in Thursday's 26-24 win over the Chargers.
Analysis: White has a team-leading 71 stops through nine games, putting him comfortably on track for his fourth consecutive season north of 100 tackles. The veteran linebacker will enjoy an extended rest and look to pick up where he left off in a Week 11 home tilt against the Bengals.
